Personal biography
I was born and raised in a high crime area in The Bronx. Once I saw a man from my window robbing the apartment across from me. I was scared and did not feel safe. During that time, I grew up watching a lot of crime shows, especially Law and Order Special Victims Unit. I loved watching this show because it was entertaining, relatable to my neighborhood, and had a strong female role. Over the years my neighborhood needed to be more help to make it a safe place for people who lives there. My passion for law enforcement has developed from wanting to reform my community and watching the television show Law and Order SVU, which dealt with neighborhood like mine. I wanted to be more versatile in the agency by assisting other departments. Coincidentally, as I was talking to my supervisor, he said, “this internship is a two way street; you are here to help us and we are here to help you, so if you would like to experience another unit, do not be afraid to tell me.” I felt such relief because I immediately told him that I wanted to sit in on intake with the investigator, and to be a part of mediation: process to settlement. I got the opportunity to sit in on intake on my third day in the office. I was excited that I got to experience this because it was the most interesting part of my internship; being able to not only sit in on intake, but to ask the clients questions about their charge. This opened the door to other opportunities like writing memoranda for an investigator and working closely with other investigators on the cases. My leadership experience began when my supervisor and his colleagues had an important meeting to attend and had no one sitting in on the office for intake office hours, so he asked me and another intern, Isaiah, to sit in from 9 AM-3PM. My supervisor taught us the main component of this position in 10 minutes. At first, I was nervous because I was new to the agency and it was my first time performing front desk duties. But after a couple of clients I began to get more comfortable and confident with the process because I had performed similar duties when I was in my cubicle. At this moment I felt like I was a leader because I was put in a position where I had minimum training, but still could take control of the office duties, and according to my supervisor, my performance level was beyond expectations. This experience has helped to redefine my definition of leadership. Leadership is not only being a leader of the group, but it is being put into a situation where you know nothing and being able to excel. A leader must be able to think outside the box and come up with new ideas. I can definitely say that I was leader and performed leadership skills in my experience. Throughout history the National Honor Society has become synonymous with the best of the best. A school club that has built a legacy on students who exemplify the ideals of leadership, service, character, and citizenship. To even be considered for a group of this nature would be an honor within itself. Leadership is simply defined as the action of leading a group of people or an organization however, I believe leadership to be much more than simply being in charge. My most significant leadership experience would be when I was in the Girls Varsity Tennis Team. I had been in the tennis team during my highschool years, for 2 years. During that time I learned a lot about being a leader, such as what it means to lead others, and what qualities a leader should have. When I first started playing tennis I started at the position on 2nd doubles, to me I took it as that I was not good enough to play against an opponent by myself on the court. Being the assistant, I did a multitude of jobs: paperwork, attendance, score calculating, award distribution, announcements, etc. I ran around like a chicken with his head cut off. My first leadership experience came from being a voluntary work as a life- and management skills trainer, where I had to deal with different background, minds and studies trainees, to be the leader of my own session, the thing that let me build my communication, discussion and presentation skills. A time that I have ever taken a leadership role was when I was a junior staff at Kid’s Clubhouse when I was 14. We had taken the kids to the Museum of Natural Science in Raleigh, NC because the place we were going to go had been closed down. It was organized chaos and the kids were wanting to run around the place but we had to remember that everyone was suppose to be back at the bus by 3:30 pm. The four pillars of NHS, service, scholarship, leadership, and character, mean a lot to me. Some of them relate to me more than others, but all play a huge part in NHS. Not one of them is more important than the rest. Creating these four pillars help shape who you are in NHS and even who you are for the rest of your life. I am honored to be considered for the National Honor Society program at Bryan High School. The Accidental Leader: What to Do When You’re Suddenly in Charge Being a leader can happen to any one of us at any time. When we are given the role of being a leader it often paints a different image of what we look like to others based on the fact that we are in charge. Critical Reflection on Leadership Leadership is hard to talk about, mostly because it is somewhat vague and very conceptual. I’ve learned a lot both professionally and personally. Receiving the hand on experience was a great addition to my education. This internship has allowed me to see how the justice system functions, and has gotten me more interested in politics along with the law.
